Personalised Advice
If you would like some more information, or personalised advice, you can get this several ways.
You can fill in an advice request online, please click here to be taken to the questionaire. Please use the back button on your browser to return to here after you have completed the questionaire. The back button (between home and news) will not work from that page.
You can download a copy of the questionaire in MS Word format. You can then complete the questionaire at your leisure, and either send it back by post, or e-mail it back as an attachment. You will not be able to save it directly from the site, however, you can higlight all the text, right click the mouse, click copy. Open MS word on your computer, right click your mouse in a new document, click paste. You can now work on it, save it, etc. Click here for to download the file.
You can also contact us by e-mail, or by phone, on 01430 425257. In order for us to advise you with regard to your own personal circumstances, please include answers to as many of the following questions as possible. Please do not feel that you have to answer them all, it just helps if we can have a better picture of which nappy system might suit you the best.
You should receive a full answer within 2 weeks, often faster. I don't want to make promises I can't keep, so please bear in mind that I do fit this business in and around the needs of my daughter and I do like to take time to carefully consider each answer. Please note that there may be times when I am particularly busy with advice requests, so at those times it is usually more fair to partly prioritise by due date. You will receive a reply, but if you wish to have an answer by a certain date, please say so, but try to be fair if your baby isn't due for a while yet. It make take longer during school holiday times, as we do try to take time out for the family then, plus I try to concentrate on family over the Christmas period. Please be assured that you will receive a reply though. Thank you in advance for your patience. In general, it is best to ask for advice at least one month before you want to purchase your nappies.
If writing by post, please remember to include areply address and a telephone number if you would like a reply by phone. You may find it easier to print this out first and refer to it while writing an e-mail or calling by phone. You can also cut and paste this into an e-mail to answer each question in turn. To do this, hold the left mouse button down as you drag over the text, this highlights the text to copy. Click right mouse button, select "copy", left mouse click, then click here to open a new e-mail to us. Click the right mouse button again in the e-mail window, then highlight "paste", left mouse click, and the text will appear in the e-mail window. You can now type between the lines to answer the questions.
I shall try to narrow it down to a choice of two nappies, but may point out some similar alternatives and say why.
-
Age of baby or approximate due date.
-
Sex of baby.
-
Approx weight of baby.
-
Do you have, or do you anticipate having, another child in nappies at the same time? Twins or different ages?
-
Do you want the nappies to last for one or more children in addition to this one?
-
Do you consider your child to be a heavy wetter?
-
Is your baby tall and slim, or chubby? Round the waist and thighs? If you have older children, have they been larger than average at age 2 or so? Are you or partner taller than average?
-
Will your child be cared for regularly in any form or childcare, e.g. Nursery or Childminder? Do you know if they are likely to be open to the idea of cloth nappies/ use cloth nappies now?
-
Will your child be cared for on an occasional basis by anyone else, e.g. occasional crèche, family, babysitter?
-
Is your partner supportive of your desire to use cloth nappies, and are they likely to help with nappy changes?
-
Is there any history of eczema in the family, and/or allergies?
-
How will you dry the nappies, on a line (in or outside), tumble drier, radiator, other?
-
Have you used any cloth nappies before? Which ones, did they work for you, if not, what went wrong? What did you like or dislike about them?
-
Have a look through the catalogue pages that describe the different nappies. (follow the nappy link on the menu to the left). Having read through these, do you think you will prefer a fitted shaped nappy, or will you be able to cope with a more economical flat nappy system?
-
Would you prefer the slightly neater (less bulky) and better fit (much wider size range, and better fit at each stage of growth) of a nappy that has more than one size, or are you happy to make a slight compromise on this to reduce the overall cost of buying? (you do not have to compromise on leak proofing)
-
Are you prepared to pay a little more for a nappy system that is organically grown?
-
Which of the following are important to you? If possible, give a mark out of 10 for the importance you attach to that point (i.e. 10/10 is the most important to you).
-
Cost.
-
Environmental impact, before and after purchase. Organic cotton for example, has little effect on you personally, but it does affect the health of the growers and processors. Synthetic content of nappies and covers will leave an environmental footprint after use, as they don't easily biodegrade, although there will still be very much less of it than if you used disposables. It is useful to know if these are important issues to you, although please don't feel obliged to answer this question.
-
No leaks at all.
-
Ease of use (do you mind a bit of folding?).
-
Speed of changing.
-
Which do you prefer, unbleached natural colour, white, patterned?
-
Velcro (faster but less secure) or poppers (more fiddly, but more secure)?
-
Speed of drying.
-
Do you have a set budget to stick to for the whole birth to potty period (for nappies and wraps, not including liners as these are optional), if so, approximately how much? Please don't feel obliged to answer this, although it can be useful to help you choose between different nappy systems. Up to £200 (probably flat nappies), up to £300 (probably one size birth to potty fitted nappies), up to £400 (probably 2 sized birth to potty nappies), over £400 (Ultra Easy change system, such as Nature Babies Stuffables)? Bear in mind most of these should last at least one child, and in most cases more, especially the 2 sized nappies.
